Only a few of the items available for Lunch at Harvard are Closest To Homemade® >> made with the type of ingredients we would use at home:

Following is a close look at what’s in four items on the menu:

1. BUFFALO DOG - This item has five inclusions of Sweeteners including Corn Syrup and has eight ingredients banned at Whole Foods including multiple FDA-recognized Chemical Preservatives. (Source: U.S. FDA 2023; Source for banned ingredients: Amazon Whole Foods Web site 7/23)

2. BRAIN BREAK SELECTIONS - Students and Professors at Harvard are offered items categorized as a “Brain Break”. Are these selections actually beneficial for the human brain?

3. EGGPLANT MILANESE - This dish is Far From Homemade with six ingredients banned at Whole Foods, four inclusions of Sweeteners plus multiple ingredients we would never use at home such as Soybean Oil.

4. BOOM BOOM SAUCE - This Harvard Sauce contains added Sugar and five Chemical Preservatives, four of which are banned at Whole Foods. Soybean Oil is the first ingredient which is a commercial oil Not In Kitchen™.

Seen below, even simple items at Harvard have added Sugar and/or Chemical Preservatives and are all banned at Whole Foods >> banned ingredients circled in green.

GO LOCAL: Massachusetts abounds with farms and food and beverage companies and creators. Why doesn’t Harvard source their goods from local providers as much as possible? There is a huge missed opportunity to enhance students’ health and lives while simultaneously increasing the state’s economy, reputation and vibrancy. Massachusetts and all states should consider creating a network of farm-to-school resources for all of their local learning institutions. Lead the way, Harvard.
